Does Brita Remove PFAS? No — Here Is What Does
Brita pitchers do not remove PFAS. Not the cheap one. Not the Elite. Not any of them. If your concern is forever chemicals — common for vets near older bases and for families on tested-positive municipal water — you need a different filter type. Here is the science, the proof, and four picks that work.
Short Answer
No. Brita is not NSF P473 certified. Only filters with NSF P473 are third-party tested for PFAS removal.
The Short Answer
No. Brita does not remove PFAS.
Brita uses a filter type called GAC (short for granular activated carbon). GAC traps chlorine, taste, odor, and some metals. It does not trap PFAS. PFAS bits are too small and too slick. They slide right through.
This is not a slam on Brita. The brand is honest about it. Brita's own product pages do not claim PFAS removal. The trouble is that many buyers assume “filter = removes everything.” It does not. A filter only removes what it is built to remove.
What Brita Does Remove
Brita filters carry two third-party safety marks:
- NSF 42 — covers chlorine taste and odor.
- NSF 53 — covers some metals (mercury, cadmium, copper). The Brita Elite filter also covers lead under NSF 53.
Both marks are real. The filter does what they say. But neither one tests for PFAS. The mark for PFAS removal is NSF P473. No Brita filter holds NSF P473.
Why GAC Cannot Trap PFAS
Activated carbon works by trapping things in tiny pores. The pores hold molecules that “stick” to carbon — most metals, most odor compounds, chlorine.
PFAS bits are not like that. They have a long chain of carbon and fluorine atoms. The fluorine end is “slick” — nothing sticks to it well. The chain is also small enough to slip through the pore at a fast flow. Standard GAC is not built to catch them.
There are special GAC blends that DO trap PFAS. They use much smaller pores, much longer flow paths, and a final layer of ion-swap resin. Those are what NSF P473 pitchers use. Brita does not use them.
Two Common “Proof” Claims That Are Wrong
You may see Brita defenders point to two things as proof that Brita removes PFAS. Both are wrong.
1. “My TDS meter dropped after Brita.” TDS meters measure total dissolved solids. That covers things like minerals, salt, and some metals. PFAS bits are too small to show on a TDS meter. A TDS drop after a filter proves nothing about PFAS.
2. “It tastes better, so it must work.” Brita does make water taste better. It strips chlorine. But PFAS has no taste. No smell. No color. You cannot taste your way to safety on this one.
What Vets and Families Should Know
If you worry about PFAS from your service — base water, fire foam, on-base housing in older years — Brita is not enough.
The same goes for civilians whose city water has tested high for PFAS. EPA data shows PFAS in about 45% of U.S. tap water at some level. State testing pushes the number higher in some spots (Michigan, North Carolina, parts of New England).
For more on base water issues, see our Camp Lejeune water guide.
Four Filters That DO Remove PFAS
If you want a real PFAS filter, here are the four picks we trust. Each is third-party tested. Each fits a different setup and budget.
1. Clearly Filtered Pitcher — best pitcher for PFAS. NSF P473 mark for PFAS removal (99.7% PFOA, 99.9% PFOS in third-party tests). Same shape as a Brita pitcher. Around $90 for the pitcher and a starter cartridge. New filters last 4 months.
2. AquaTru RO Countertop System — best counter system. A small RO unit that sits on the counter. No plumber needed. Around $400 for the unit, $90 a year for filter swaps. Removes PFAS, lead, fluoride, and many other toxins.
3. SpringWell CF Whole-House System — best whole-house. A larger unit that ties into your main water line. Filters PFAS at every tap in the house — kitchen, bath, laundry, shower. Around $1,800 for the unit. Lasts 1 million gallons before swap.
4. Waterdrop G3 P800 RO Under-Sink — best under-sink. A tankless RO unit that mounts under the sink. Hooks into your cold line and feeds a small drinking tap. Around $700 for the unit. Filters PFAS and 1,000+ other toxins.
For our full side-by-side test of these and more, see our best PFAS water filters page.
What About ZeroWater?
ZeroWater is the other “high-removal” pitcher brand. The honest answer: no NSF P473 mark.
ZeroWater uses ion-swap resin. That is part of what real PFAS filters use, but only part. Without third-party PFAS testing under NSF P473, the brand's claims are not proven. Some users point to low TDS readings as proof. As we said above, TDS meters do not measure PFAS.
If you buy for PFAS removal, look for the NSF P473 mark. If a brand does not carry it, do not assume it works.
What About Boiling?
Boiling water does not remove PFAS. In fact, boiling makes the problem slightly worse — water boils away, but PFAS stays. The remaining water has a slightly higher PFAS level. Boiling is great for bacteria. It does nothing for forever chemicals.
What About a Refrigerator Filter?
Most fridge filters use the same GAC approach as Brita. They strip chlorine, taste, and some metals. They do not trap PFAS unless the spec sheet shows NSF P473. Read the carton. If P473 is not listed, assume no PFAS removal.
How to Test Your Own Water
If you want to know your home's PFAS level before you spend money on a filter, two paths work:
1. Free utility report.Every public water utility in the U.S. publishes a yearly Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). It lists what is in your tap water. Some now include PFAS. Search “[your city name] water quality report 2025.”
2. Paid home test. A few labs sell PFAS test kits for $200 to $400. You collect a sample at home and ship it back. Results in 2 to 3 weeks. Worth it if your area has tested positive and you want a baseline before filtering.
Quick Recap
- Brita does not remove PFAS. No Brita filter holds NSF P473.
- Brita does remove chlorine taste, some metals, and (with the Elite filter) lead.
- TDS meters do not measure PFAS. A drop in TDS proves nothing.
- For real PFAS removal, look for NSF P473 — Clearly Filtered Pitcher is the easiest swap.
- For a full house, SpringWell CF whole-house is the move.
- For under-sink, Waterdrop G3 P800. For counter, AquaTru.
- ZeroWater is not third-party tested for PFAS.
- Boiling does not help. Most fridge filters do not help.
- Test your own water with a free utility report or a paid home kit.
Common Questions
Does Brita remove PFAS?
No. Brita uses activated carbon (GAC), which cannot trap PFAS. No Brita product holds NSF P473 — the only mark that tests for PFAS removal.
Does Brita remove PFOA and PFOS?
No. PFOA and PFOS are the two most-tested PFAS types. Brita's GAC filter is not built to trap them. No test has shown Brita removes PFOA or PFOS.
What does Brita actually filter?
Chlorine taste and odor (NSF 42 mark), copper, mercury, and cadmium (NSF 53 mark). The Brita Elite filter also covers lead under NSF 53. None of these marks cover PFAS.
What pitcher does remove PFAS?
The Clearly Filtered Water Pitcher is NSF P473 certified for PFAS removal — third-party tests show 99.7% PFOA and 99.9% PFOS removal. Around $90 for the pitcher and starter cartridge.
Does ZeroWater remove PFAS?
ZeroWater does not hold NSF P473. Some users point to low TDS readings as proof, but TDS meters do not measure PFAS. Without a P473 mark, the claims are not proved.
Will boiling water remove PFAS?
No. Boiling does not remove PFAS. It actually concentrates PFAS slightly because some water boils off but the chemicals stay. Boiling is good for bacteria. It does nothing for forever chemicals.
Does my refrigerator filter remove PFAS?
Most fridge filters use the same GAC approach as Brita and do not remove PFAS. Check the spec sheet for your filter — if NSF P473 is not listed, assume no PFAS removal.
How can I test my home water for PFAS?
Two ways. First, check your utility's free Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) for PFAS data. Second, buy a home test kit ($200 to $400) from a state lab. Results take 2 to 3 weeks.
What's the best whole-house PFAS filter?
The SpringWell CF whole-house system. It treats every tap — kitchen, bath, laundry, shower — for around $1,800. Worth it if you also worry about PFAS in your shower.
